From hybridizer Patrick O'Connor: Waldemar Nelson. The son of Mary Nelson, who began growing irises in New Orleans in 1909, and was a founding member of SLI. She would take her sons, including Waldemar, out before school to collect irises in New Orleans. Waldemar had a lifelong interest in irises, also. He was active on the City Park board, and created a well known engineering firm, Waldemar Nelson Co. I never met him. He joined GNOIS when it was formed in 2001, but passed away not long after.
